This 5513 is in overall great, honest vintage condition. The case is in good condition with scratches, nicks, and wear throughout; the bevels are still visible. The back of the case is stamped "5513" and "I.66.” Serial and reference numbers are clearly visible. The bezel ring has remained sharp. The "Long 5" bezel insert is in overall great condition with some scratches and wear. The lume pip has wear and the outer part has broken off. The crown is a later "trip-lock" replacement. The dial has developed a spider webbing effect mainly around its periphery, giving it a unique look; this can be hard to notice. The edge of the dial shows some wear and one spot to note is the edge at 12 has chipping. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a lovely buttery yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a similar color as the lume on the dial. This has a 93150 bracelet with no. 580 end links, divers extension and 12 links. The oyster bracelet is in great condition with light wear; it has 12 links. The clasp is stamped “CP 12” indicating it's a later replacement post 2011.
Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte the matte style after 1966. The example we have here is circa 1966 and would be part of the last run of glossy dials.
This example is in beautiful, honest condition, with the dial exhibiting a distinctive "spidering," lume patina that gives the watch an instantly recognizable character. We love how the "Long 5" bezel has stayed jet black and how the buttery yellow lume contrasts so nicely with all the black elements of the watch. This watch comes directly from the family of the original owner who wore and cherished the watch for many years.
